As a SSW student, you can prepare for a career in Veteran and military mental health settings through coursework and field internships.
All students heading into a VA or DOD field internship must enroll in Beyond Combat: Social Work Theory and Practice Models, a course taught by Kathryn Basham and Col. Camille Hall, an Army Veteran, Smith Ph.D. and professor at the University of Tennessee.
We’ve also embedded content relevant to the care of Veterans, servicemembers, and their families in many of the courses in the SSW curriculum. For examples, students have the opportunity to take courses on the neurobiology of trauma, collective trauma, and narrative approaches to trauma recovery along with social policy and research courses that focus attention on this population. Additionally, students study de-identified cases from the field that involve Veterans, servicemembers, and their families in various required and elective clinical practice courses.
