Grants

SSW grant (need-based aid) eligibility is based upon an analysis of standard factors such as income, assets, family size and taxes paid, as well as weighted factors which include age and student loan debt still owed.

  • Grants range from $3,000 to $15,000 per year in year 1 and year 2.
  • Grants range from $200 to $2,000 for the final summer.
  • The School makes every effort to maintain the level of grant aid offered in Year 1 into Year 2. 
  • FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required each year.
  • Students may be asked to write to an alumni or friend of the School who has donated a named fund in support of grant aid.​

Housing Stipends

To facilitate a learning community during the summer academic program, housing and meal costs will be covered for any doctoral student who qualifies for need-based aid and opts to live on campus during the summer.

  • Commitment to on-campus living for all three summers (please note, these funds may not be transferred off campus for any reason).
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required.

Smith SSW has several specific types of merit aid that are determined at the time of admission. In general, consideration for merit scholarships is given to those applicants awarded grant aid so a FAFSA is required. Separate application requirements may be necessary. Please review the details for each.

In general, merit scholarships are awarded on a two-year basis Ph.D. students.
