Families with Children during Field Internships

Field Internships

While the Field Education Department takes family and personal circumstances into account in assigning students to placements, you do need to be prepared to work 30 hours a week during standard business hours (typically 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with perhaps one evening a week). You can complete the 30 hours of work in the field across either a four- or five-day week. Some students with children find it helpful to work five six-hour days in order to free them for afternoon childcare. The Field Education Department will try to accommodate this schedule if possible; make sure that you make your needs clear on your field internship application form with as much detail as possible about the kind of schedule that you hope for.

While in your internship you will be able to spend time with your children just as if you had a job (please note, however, that many outpatient agencies do require that you work one evening a week). You will be spending time every weekend preparing for the following week, and you do have other assignments to fulfill, but it is manageable if you pace yourself.
