J. Denise “JD” Fuller, LCSW, M.S.W. Class of 1999, is the 2025 recipient of the Day-Garrett Award for Lifetime Achievement. With more than 25 years as a clinician, educator, activist, and thought leader, Fuller’s career reflects a steadfast commitment to equity, truth-telling, and racial and social justice. A graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work, her thesis, The Racial Identity Development of the African American Female, established a lifelong focus on identity, lived experience, and systemic critique.

Fuller has served as a clinical and area director, school counselor, adjunct professor—including at The New Center for Psychoanalysis—and as a DEI and clinical consultant, integrating culturally responsive and decolonizing practices across settings. A sought-after speaker and trainer, she facilitates transformative dialogue on systemic racism, internalized oppression, and racial consciousness. Through her “Change the Narrative” podcast, Fuller challenged dominant narratives while centering healing and empowerment. Known for her empathy, authenticity, and unapologetic presence, she continues to inspire and mentor generations of social workers and students.
