Maria Ximena Maldonado Morales speaks during the 2025 commencement.

"We all walk through this world with our own experiences, beliefs, traumas and ways of seeing. We are all capable of causing harm, or pain or rupture, and we are also capable of repair, humanity, tenderness and kindness. We actively choose which path to take in our interactions with the world. We must mindfully and consciously hold our own internal and external lives with those of others; to be able to know ourselves and to really and deeply see, hear and understand others. To be able to empathize and mentalize, and to hold multiple truths at once.
 itself."

-Doctoral Class Speaker Maria Ximena Maldonado-Morales, M.P.H., Ph.D., LCSW

Jamie Daniels sits on a white couch in front of a brick wall. She is leaning on the arm of the couch and wearing a black top.

"It is time, fellow social workers, for us to reconsider what we do individually and collectively as professionals and to abandon all practices that make us complicit in the status quo. We must reconcile with our positionality, and our seductive and pervasive relationship with capitalism. We can no longer serve the neoliberal agenda and prerogative of the ruling class. We cannot address the major problems that confront society one individual at a time. And we can no longer merely tend to the wounds of a broken system; we must strive to heal the system itself."

-Doctoral Class Speaker Jamie Daniels, M.S.W. '14, Ph.D. '23
