Seeking couples/marital or family therapy is often a more complex process than initiating individual therapy. Shame or embarrassment can preclude even initiating the process, and early on the engagement can be compromised because of profound vulnerability on the part of either partner, or in the case of family therapy, on the part of parents.

Initially developed in the 1980’s at The Gestalt International Study Center (Wellfleet, Cape Cod) The Cape Cod Model © is grounded in foundational Gestalt concepts and is a distinctive approach to working with couples and families. Rather than focusing on dysfunction and failure, Gestalt in general and this program in particular will invite the therapist to consider that difficulties in couples and families are a function of a limited range of behavior and choice.

Therefore, the focus of the program is to help therapists see that “problems” in the couple or family are typically the result of over-reliance on limited competencies. Grounded in this approach, the therapist can then support the couple or family to focus on growth and development vs. “fixing” dysfunction. This workshop will be structured so that content and theory presentations are followed by small group practice sessions in which the foundational principles are applied.
