Smith School for Social Work admissions is keeping busy this fall!
Assistant Directors of Admission Lorelei Erisis and Ash Sabripour are on the road at graduate school and social work conferences, zigzagging around the country from Chicago to Kansas City to Los Angeles and more. They are meeting new interesting people and connecting with alums along the way, and finding some unexpected social work history too.
During Erisis’ visit to the University of Chicago for the Latin Social Workers Organization conference earlier this month, she came across Hull-House, the first community center in the U.S. co-founded in 1889 by a giant in social work, feminist and activist, Jane Addams. Hull-House was a leader of progressive values in Chicago, organizing labor unions, child labor laws, tenement and factory laws. It offered childcare, citizenship classes, cultural exchange groups as well as adult education courses and support for single women.
Erisis’ excitement in stumbling upon the museum was clear.
“Jane Addams; you should look her up, she’s really cool. I’m excited I’m here at Hull-House. I’m going to go back to nerding out about this,” she said on a video during an admissions Ask Me Anything on SSW’s Instagram as she walked up to the window and peered inside.
While some of the team is out in the world making connections and sharing about SSW, the rest of the team has been hosting multiple comprehensive events to help prospective students learn more about the M.S.W. and Ph.D. programs, including how to apply for an M.S.W. if you already have a B.S.W., application support Q&As and how to build a competitive application.
In exciting news, admissions is hosting the first on-campus open house event since 2019 on November 2, 2024 from 2 - 5 p.m. at Ford Hall. The admissions team can’t wait to welcome prospective students to campus to explore the M.S.W. program and gain an in-depth sense of SSW’s exceptional curriculum and hear about the opportunities for the excellent internship placements across the country directly from the Office of Practicum Learning. Dean Marianne Yoshioka and Associate Dean Megan Harding will share insights, answer questions and chat with folks on the beautiful campus at Smith College.
For those interested in the research and educational side of social work, there is a virtual open house for the doctoral program coming up on November 6. Marsha Pruett, director of the doctoral program, Katya Cerar, doctoral program clinical coordinator, and Valerie Nguyen-Hooper, interim director of admission and financial aid will share how SSW’s commitment to clinical excellence and scholarship make the Ph.D. program a competitive way to advance your career in the social work field.
Admissions will be at The Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) Annual Program Meeting in Kansas City on October 24, 25, 26 and 27, and the 32nd Annual Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference in Marquette, Michigan at Northern Michigan University October 25, 26 and 27, so stop by to say hi if you’re in town!
In the midst of a season full of travel and opportunities to showcase SSW’s programs, admissions is looking forward to meeting some of the new faces that will bring their dynamic energy to the SSW community.
