This course will explore how social workers can develop compassionate decision-making skills in various medical social work settings and scenarios. Specific skills in working with interdisciplinary teams in a medical setting will be discussed. Illness specific social work considerations and ways to identify support systems will be explored. Specific emphasis on working with patients who identify as BIPOC will also be explored. Emphasis on the impact of addictions and psychiatric conditions will be examined within the setting of various medical situations and needs. Finally, participants will discuss how social workers can gain respect in a highly specialized medical setting and gain confidence as providers. Settings such as trauma/ED, transplant, ICU and general medicine will be explored.
