Makia Matheis, a licensed independent clinical social worker and doctoral candidate at Smith College, brings over a decade of experience to her practice and teaching in private practice in Hamburg, Germany. Her expertise lies in working with individuals and families who are navigating migration, identity transitions, and the emotional complexities of unresolved loss.
Matheis' current research interests focus on ambiguous loss in the context of immigration, the role of transitional objects in psychological adaptation, and the lived experiences of internationally mobile families and children. She is also interested in the psychological impact of athletes competing for a country that is not their own, particularly the identity conflicts and external criticism they may face.
She earned her undergraduate degree in health promotion from Northern Arizona University and her M.S.W. from the University of Denver, concentrating on clinical family systems. Her professional experience spans hospital settings, public and private schools, and community-based organizations, including Boston Children’s Hospital and the Veteran Affairs Hospital & Medical Center.
With over eleven years of living in Hamburg, Germany, Matheis has developed a deep personal and professional understanding of cross-cultural adjustment and belonging. This unique perspective enriches her clinical work and makes her a relatable figure in the field. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching her son play basketball, being creative with her daughter, and traveling with her husband.
