Our Block Plan

Our Block Plan: Innovation Since 1918

Our 27-month M.S.W. curriculum employs a unique structure that separates coursework from fieldwork in five concentrated sessions. This allows you to give your undivided attention to academics during the summer and give your professional focus to full-time field internships from September to April. You’ll emerge with the skills you need—and a competitive advantage in the job market.

Session One
First summer on campus

Your first summer on campus will give you the foundation you need in clinical social work theory and practice, and prepare you for your first field internship in September.

Session Two
First field internship

After your first summer—and after a field orientation—you’ll be placed at one of more than 150 Smith College School for Social Work field affiliate agencies around the country.

Session Three
Second summer on campus

In your second summer, you’ll expand and deepen your understanding of clinical practice. When you return to campus, you’ll bring new insights and practical questions from the field into the classroom, where our case-based pedagogical model will help you go deep in your learning. Through your courses you’ll examine individual, family, psychodynamic and critical social theories, the history of racism in the U.S., along with a range of policy courses across a variety of fields of practice. You’ll study evidence-based practices and explore proven research methods, in addition to the electives that will shape your focus.

Session Four
Second field internship

In your second field internship, you may specialize in an area of clinical practice or broaden your skills by engaging a new kind of clinical setting or population.

Session Five
Third summer on campus

Your final summer is the culmination of a dynamic education and unforgettable experiences, and you’ll look forward with confidence to commencement and the start of your professional career. During your last session, you’ll select up to ten electives—from more than 60—to specialize or broaden your knowledge base. This is where intensive coursework, engagement with anti-racism, and immersive field training will shape your perspective in clinical social work—and how employers at top agencies will view your resume.
