M.S.W. March 08, 2023 Improving Care for Minorities: Yesselis Rosario '23 “I never thought in a million years I’d be accepted to the SSW—a renowned place,” said second-year student Yesselis Rosario. So after receiving her B.S.W. in 2022, she wanted to “go right away” for her master’s. With the Smith application deadline fast approaching, she decided to go for it. Not only was she accepted, but because of her undergraduate degree from Western New Mexico University—where she earned top grades—she was given advanced standing and is due to get her M.S.W. in 2023.

At 101, she is a somatic psychologist in New Mexico still passionate about her work and family.

'72 When Glendon Geikie, M.S.W. ‘72, retired in 2012 after 40 years as a Massachusetts-based social worker, his daughter convinced him to move out to California. But rather than slip into a leisurely retirement in the beautifully temperate climate, Geikie decided he wasn’t quite done performing acts of service for others.

In 2018, she returned to SSW as manager of Professional Education and is now its director. She also is an SSW field adviser, typically supervising five or six students a year.

M.S.W. February 24, 2023 A Holistic Lens: Chynna Aming, M.S.W. '23 When Chynna Aming was finishing her bachelor's degree studying the role of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in BIPOC communities, she figured she was headed toward a graduate degree in either neuroscience or public health. After discovering these concentrations did not meld disciplines in a way that matched her interests, she was advised to look into social work.
Ph.D. February 15, 2023 Passion for Micro and Macro Practice: Jamie Daniels, M.S.W. '15, Ph.D. '23 When Jamie Daniels was an undergraduate at nearby Mount Holyoke, a mentor well-acquainted with her passion for service and activism told her that she would either end up a political organizer or a social worker – and that social work has more regular hours. As a first-generation college student juggling academics and motherhood, the decision essentially made itself.
Alumni February 13, 2023 Holding A Diagnosis Lightly: Taylor Haaf, M.S.W. '22 Taylor Haaf chose SSW largely because of its commitment to social justice and its psychodynamic orientation. The courses they took and their internship with a community mental health agency played key roles in that hundred-percent preparation, as did the grounding they got in psychodynamic theory and relational therapy in particular.
