Ph.D. Field Advising

Doctoral students at Smith College School for Social Work are supported by a network of faculty and experienced social workers. Throughout their clinical internships, each student works closely with a faculty field adviser (FFA), as well as a research adviser who provides guidance for the research internship. The mentoring provided by FFAs helps to ensure continuity and congruence between what is learned in the classroom during summers at Smith College and what is learned and put into practice in the field. FFAs also work together with students and their supervisors at their agencies. By acting as a representative of the School, FFAs ensure that supervision is consistent and constructive, and that students have the support they need to provide highest caliber of services to their clients.
