Welcome new SSW students!

We are delighted you made the decision to pursue your degree in social work here at Smith SSW. We've compiled checklists, forms, schedules and helpful websites here. New Student Checklist

To accept your offer of admission and complete enrollment, please complete the following items by their due date:

March 15 (or within two weeks of accepting your offer of admission; not later than April 10)
  • Summer Housing Form: ALL students are asked to complete the form and indicate whether they will OPT OUT of on-campus housing or REQUEST on-campus housing and food plan for summer. Those requesting housing should submit their requests as soon as possible. The final deadline for submitting a housing request is 4/10; accommodations after 4/10 cannot be guaranteed. This form will become available 2/1.
  • Single room housing is available to all enrolled students; housing is all gendered and includes all meals. In addition, students who have minor children (younger than 18) living with them at least half of the summer may request limited Family Housing. Housing and food plan costs are listed here.
April 1

Photo for Campus ID: Submit your photo on the ITS portal. Please wait until you have your Workday login in February.

Request Course Waiver/Transfer Course (if you plan to waive out of or transfer previous coursework. Please note, only courses completed at accredited MSW programs in which the grade of B or better is received may be transferred into the Smith transcript.)

April 10Record of Immunizations, and Tuberculosis screening, must be uploaded to the health portal using Medicat. Medicat access is required and will be available mid-March or within a week of accepting the offer of admission, whichever is later. Entering students who do not clear the immunization record with medical services by the deadline will not be registered for classes. 
April 15Accommodations and Services Request, Accessibility Resource Center. Students in need of accommodation must contact the Accessibility Resource Center for accommodation in their classroom, internship, housing, or dining.
May 5Registrar's Office will release full course schedules to incoming first-year students; no additional action is required for those students, as courses are pre-selected in the first summer. 
May 15Tuition payments due: Tuition bills will be posted by April 24 and are due to be paid by May 15.
May 17

Review and acknowledge the following in Workday:

  • Smith College SSW Mission Statement
  • SSW Five Core Principles: Students are responsible for reviewing and acknowledging the SSW 5 Guiding Principles.
  • NASW Code of Ethics: In accordance with the professional standards, students are expected to adhere to the NASW Code of Ethics.
  • FERPA Information: Review the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) as amended.
  • M.S.W. or Ph.D. Student Handbook: This form acknowledges that you have read and will follow the handbook.
  • M.S.W. Internship Guidelines: Students are expected to review the guidelines for entering your internship and use this document for future reference.
  • Academic Calendar & Moodle Information: Students acknowledge receipt of the academic calendar and Moodle use information. This can be saved for future reference.
  • Acceptable Use Policy: This form acknowledges that you understand and will follow Smith’s Acceptable Use Policy for technology resources and services.
  • My Friends and Family: Provide information for emergency contacts.
  • My Home Contact Information: Include home mailing address, phone number and email.
  • My Personal Information: Confirm or update personal information, including optional pronouns.
  • My Personal Photo: Upload a digital photo of yourself to be used in Workday.
  • Consent to Receive Form 1098-T Electronically: The IRS form is used to assist the taxpayer in determining eligibility for certain education tax credits.
  • Non-Discrimination and Anti-Hazing Statute: Read and acknowledge Smith’s Non-Discrimination Policy and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Hazing Statute.
  • Statement of Shared Responsibility: Students are expected to follow all safety measures to lower and prevent the risk of spreading COVID-19.
May 30

Student Check-In: All students are required to arrive on campus on Friday, May 30, 2025. Additional information will be available in early 2025.

Move-In: Students living in campus housing may move in on Friday, May 30, 2025 after the mandatory student check-in. 

After May 31Meal purchases for Off Campus Students: Meals for off-campus students are available upon request, the form will become available in February. Please note that meals can only be purchased at the beginning of each term; unused meals can roll from term 1 to term 2.
May 30-June 1Convocation & Orientation (attendance required for all entering students): Orientation will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31; Convocation is Sunday afternoon, June 1. Watch this link for details on the events.
June 2Classes begin: Term 1 Classes begin on Monday, June 2, 2025
June 16

Deadline to opt-out of Gallagher Insurance: All students are required to carry health insurance while they are enrolled. In early March you will receive notification of insurance coverage from Gallagher Insurance. You can find information about the plan at this site. You will be billed for this insurance in May and will be responsible for this charge unless you have an alternative insurance plan and waive out of the Gallagher Health Insurance plan. Instructions for waiving the policy can be found on our site
